2016 NFL Preview – AFC West

The defending Super Bowl champions come form this division. But with a new, untested quarterback, can the broncos defend their division title let alone their Super Bowl title? This could be the most competitive division in the NFL.

Denver Broncos

2015 Record: 12-4

The Broncos made a change at the quarterback position. That’s usually a big deal. But they got terrible quarterback play last year and still won the Super Bowl. We don’t think new starter Trevor Siemian will be good. But he doesn’t really have to be. This defense will win them games. But they won’t be as dominant in 2016.

Projected Record: 10-6

Kansas City Chiefs

2015 Record: 11-5

The Chiefs were a very good 11-5 last year. They won their final 10 games of the season, even with Jamaal Charles out, with an elite defense and Alex Smith finding a way to score some points in the slowest way imaginable. We see another solid season from the Chiefs but the defense won’t be nearly as good with Justin Houston out for half the season. But 10-6 isn’t bad.

Projected Record: 10-6

Oakland Raiders

2015 Record: 7-9

The Raiders are viewed as an up and coming team ready to take the next step. But are they? They weren’t really good on offense or defense last year. Derek Carr threw a bunch of TDs but he was 26th in yards per attempt, a more meaningful statistic for QBs. He’s still young so we expect improvement especially with Amari Cooper heading into his second season, but don’t expect a top ten offense. The Raiders just might have the best defensive player in the league in Khalil Mack though. We could see a much improved Raiders defense in 2016.

Projected Record: 8-8

San Diego Chargers

2015 Record: 4-12

The Chargers only won 4 games last year but they were really more like a 6 win team. They lost a number of close games, some even on the final play. And if they didn’t have so many injuries maybe they would have been an 8 win team. But they’ll have injuries again (they always do). But at least Joey Bosa is finally a Charger. He should help right away, but not enough to win them the division.

Projected Record: 7-9
