Fads come and go; that’s what makes them fads. One of the most curious fads of the 90’s was that brief period in 1996 where ska music became big. The ska-influenced Sublime was the biggest rock band in the world (even with a dead frontman) and maybe listeners just wanted something similar. By the end of 1997 we were over the horn section and had moved on but we’ll never forget that short time when ska was a big deal in the music industry.
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones of Boston (see the brilliant pun there) were ska pioneers, originally forming in 1983. But they had to wait a while to hit it big with their 1996 single “The Impression That I Get”. And hit it big they did as the song reached #1 on the modern rock charts in 1997.
