Huge tragedies, like we saw last week in Orlando, are rare, thankfully. But, minor ones happen everyday. It has been confirmed that 27 year old actor Anton Yelchin was killed in a car accident earlier today. His car rolled down his driveway crushing him between the car and the gate to his house. A truly terrible accident. While the young actor has been taken from us well before his time, he still had a career to be proud of.
At just 12 years old he starred in Hearts of Atlantis with Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins. A few years later he starred in Alpha Dog as a teenager kidnapped by a group of drug dealers. With these two movies he had solidified himself as a legitimate Hollywood actor before he had even turned 18. He would soon find himself appearing in a couple of huge blockbusters in 2009, Star Trek and Terminator: Salvation.
The terminator movie sucked (not his fault) but Star Trek was a huge hit. In it, Yelchin played Pavel Chekov, a Russian engineer and crew member. Yelchin himself is Russian and was even born in the USSR. His parents were famous figure skaters in Russia but emigrated to the United states after Anton was born.
Yelchin is most known for Star Trek, as it has spawned two sequels, but he also starred in films such as Charlie Bartlett, Like Crazy, and Fright Night. Earlier this year he starred in Green Room, an independent horror movie with great reviews. The movie was about a punk band that ends up at playing a bar run by skinheads; their leader played by fellow Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart. Sounds crazy, but honestly the reception has been very positive.
You can see Yelchin in one of his final films, the upcoming Star Trek sequel Star Trek Beyond. Anton Yelchin was a proven talent who still had great things ahead of him. It’s a shame we’ll never get to see it.
