The biggest story in this young baseball season is in fact a man named Story. Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies has started his career quite well, which is an understatement. He’s hit a home run in each of his team’s three games and has hit four altogether. He’s also a rookie and these are the first three games in his major league career.
Truly a wonderful story for Story. No one could have predicted a start like this for the young shortstop. But he did hit six homers in spring training showing his power. He’s making Rockies fans forget about Troy Tulowitzki. And he’s done all this on the road. That’s four homers away from the elevation of Coors Field. What’s he going to do when he starts playing games in Colorado?
But maybe we shouldn’t get too excited. We’ve seen players get off to hot starts only to be out of the league in a few years. Remember Chris Shelton in 2006 hitting 9 home runs in the first 13 games of the season? He was back in AAA by August. We hope that’s not the case for Story as we prefer stories with happy endings.
If Story is for real it will go along way towards returning Colorado to playoff contention. They already have two elite hitters in Carlos Gonzalez and Nolan Arenado and Story would only make their jobs easier. Even if it doesn’t work out in the long run for Trevor, there’s no denying that he will be the top story of the first week of the 2016 MLB season.
