The movie adaptation of the popular Assassin’s Creed video game series has been talked about for quite a while, including here, but until now no details about the film have come out. Aside from Michael Fassbender’s name, no one knew anything about this movie. Was Fassbender going to be in it or was he just going to produce? Who would he play? Are they following the story line of the games? Now we finally know, a little bit at least.
If you’re unfamiliar with the video game series I can try to catch you up but I’ll warn you that you’ll probably be lost anyways. You could say the games are about the historical battle between the Assassins and the Templars but there’s so much more to the story. In the present day the Assassins and the Templars are still fighting. Also, in this present day there is technology that allows people to relive their ancestor’s memories. Don’t argue this. I can’t explain it and the game doesn’t really explain it either. This is what allows the games to take place during historical times like the Renaissance or the American Revolution. Do you get it?
So, the first detail about the movie is that Fassbender will be playing an Assassin in the present day, Callum Lynch. Lynch is not a character from the video games (maybe he will be in the future), so it’s an all new story line. In the movie Lynch will relive the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar (also played by Fassbender), in 15th Century Spain. What else do we know about the movie?
The movie is also starring Marion Cotillard (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) and is going to be directed by Justin Kurzel. This is the same team that made the upcoming Macbeth adaptation that will be out in October. What else?
It’s scheduled to be releases December 21, 2016 and production starts Monday? Sounds pretty good.
