Memorial Day Weekend is one of the most important weekends in the movie industry. Studios release some of their most anticipated movies this weekend and due to the Monday holiday, it is one of the biggest money making weekends as well. This year, the big releases are Poltergeist and Tomorrowland. Neither film is rated as fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Is, this an anomaly or is this part of a bigger trend.
First let’s look at the the top ten highest grossing memorial day weekend releases:
1. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
3. X-Men: The Last Stand
4. Fast & Furious 6
5. X-Men: Days of Future Past
6. The Hangover Part II
7. The Lost World: Jurassic Park
8. The Day After Tomorrow
9. Bruce Almighty
10. Pearl Harbor
Wow, that list makes you want to stay home this weekend. It’s mostly bad sequels to much better movies. There’s only three movies on that list that I would consider above average. 3/10! That’s failing, badly. Maybe there are some gems further down the list. Let’s see.
Not the new one. The shitty Matthew Broderick one.
The Hangover Part III
Can it get worse?
Sex and the City 2
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Super Mario Bros.
Ernest Goes to Camp
Crocodile Dundee II
This is awful. It’s disgraceful. We’re supposed to be honoring those who gave their lives and Hollywood uses the day to dump all their shitty sequels and terrible video game adaptations. There has to be something better. Can the weekend be redeemed? This is Tony’s Take’s top five Memorial Day Weekend Releases:
5. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
4. X-Men: Days of Future Past
3. Return of the Jedi
