Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! Even if you’re not Mexican descent you can celebrate the day. Odds are that someone who is important to you. So there’s not a better day to think about the great people that actually are of Mexican descent that we know and love. Here our our five favorites:

Alejandro González Iñárritu

The Mexican director is absolutely killing it right now with back to back Oscar wins for his last two films, Birdman and The Revenant. Before that Iñárritu directed the films Babel and 21 Grams, which combined for 9 Oscar nominations as well. He’s firmly established himself as one of Hollywood’s best over the last few years.

Louis C.K.

2011’s favorite fun fact was that the red haired comedian was actually Mexican. He may not look it but his father is definitely Mexican and Louis even lived in Mexico until the age of 7. It really doesn’t matter what he is though. Either way he’s still the biggest comedian in the world right now.

Hilda Solis

Ms. Solis may not be a household name but we need someone other than entertainers on this list, right? Solis served as the Secretary of Labor under President Obama during his first term. Before that she served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and a term in the California State Senate where she helped increase the minimum wage to $5.75. Impressive stuff.

Zack de la Rocha

The Rage Against the Machine frontman has always been a huge activist for many causes including those of the Mexican people. He’s even a member of the Zapatista movement, the subject of the Rage Against the Machine song “People of the Sun”. Even if you disagree with Zack and his band’s politics you can’t deny how hard they rocked. Even the Republican Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, is a fan.

Danny Trejo

It seems like the Mexican actor hasn’t stopped working since 1985. I think it’s safe to say this is one Mexican who definitely has taken someone’s job at some point. Just look at his IMDB page. He’s been in like 100 movies just since 2010. You know Danny, you don’t have to play every Mexican in every movie. There are other Mexican actors. But I don’t mind how prolific he is because he’s so damn great in everything he does.

Honorable Mentions: Guillermo Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Fernando Valenzuela, Carlos Santana, Mario Lopez, Arianny Celeste
