Greed, corruption, and money. This sounds like the start of the movie Wall Street. Unfortunately, this isn’t a movie review, it’s about the corruption that’s plagued FIFA this week. Fourteen defendants are being sought out; seven have already been arrested. The 14 include high ranking officials of FIFA, leaders of regional governing bodies under the FIFA umbrella, and sports marketing executives. Overall, there are 47 counts of wire fraud, money laundering, and racketeering. The investigation spans decades and the US is seeking immediate extradition of all unaccounted members in question.
FIFA plans to reboot its entire organization in attempts to clean up their image. FIFA states that in no way should this affect the 2018 World Cup even though there is heavy talk of sponsors reconsidering their involvement with the association.
