Over the past couple decades, some rather lousy things have happened in September. You’ve got storms and hurricanes like Katrina, the reminder each year of 9/11, and school starting. Green Day released the single, Wake Me Up, When September Ends and hit the nail on the head.
Of course the meaning of the song is about singer, Billie Joe Armstrong’s father passing away due to cancer. Armstrong was only 10 at the time. He has gone on to say that he found the song to be therapeutic but tough to perform.
The song has resonated with an entire generation who’s encountered loss or misery of some kind. This isn’t the first time they’ve created an anthem if you will. Every high school student listens to Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) around graduation (at least they used to). Looking back on the memories of the last four years. Green day has a talent for capturing a mood or a moment. Particularly with these two songs.
So, it’s time to wake up… September has ended.
