The Top Video Games of the 2015 Holiday Season

Christmas is still awhile away and Black Friday isn’t for another two months but the holiday season has already started when it comes to video games. A number of big games have already come out but there is still so many more expected hits that have yet to come out, including the latest installments of some of gaming’s biggest franchises.

If you haven’t made the switch to one of the new consoles yet, this holiday season might be the time. The Xbox One has a ton of great bundles and have a few more on the way, including the Xbox One Elite bundle featuring a 1TB hard drive and the new controller and a Halo 5 special bundle. The PS4 doesn’t have the variety of bundles Xbox has, although the new Destiny PS4 looks really nice, but there might be a price drop before Black Friday. I would hold off on buying either until we know what the Black Friday deals will be.

The big games released just in the past month include:

Madden NFL 16 (Metacritic: 83)

Until Dawn (Metacritic: 79)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Metacritic: 93)

Super Mario Maker (Metacritic: 88)

Mad Max (Metacritic: 70)

Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 (Metacritic: 87)

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (Metacritic: 82)

Destiny: The Taken King (Metacritic: 87)

NHL 16 (Metacritic: 80)

Forza Motorsport 6 (Metacritic: 88)

Skylanders: Superchargers (Metacritic: 84)

FIFA 16 (Metacritic: 86)

That’s a nice lineup. The Mad Max doesn’t have the best reviews but looks like a fun way to waste some time. It had been a long time since the last Metal Gear Solid game but it looks like it was worth the wait as MGSV is an early game of the year contender. We also got some solid new entries from annual franchises like Forza, Madden, and FIFA. There is still so much more to come out though. Here’s some of the big releases scheduled before the end of the year:

September 25

NBA 2K16

This year’s edition will have three cover athletes (including the Rocket’s James Harden). This series is always worth playing for basketball fans.

September 27

Lego Dimensions

The newest Lego video game will be unlike any other before it. It will feature characters from The Simpsons, DC Comics, The Lego Movie, Scooby Doo, and more.

September 29

NBA Live 16

The return of NBA Live has not worked out yet. Maybe it will be better this year.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5

I have a lot of good memories of the Tony Hawk series. The problem is this game doesn’t look too much different from my memories. It looks like a PS2 game.

October 6

Rock Band 4

Rock Band is back for the first time since 2010. Check out the updates to the fake instruments in the video above.

October 9

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

There are a lot of PS4 owners who didn’t own a PS3 and therefore never played the Uncharted series. If you’re one of them, The Nathan Drake Collection is a must buy. The original Uncharted games looked great on the PS3 and looks even better on PS4.

October 20

Guitar Hero Live

A new Rock Band and Guitar Hero. This holiday season you can travel back in time to 2007.

October 23

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Let’s hope this year’s Assassin’s Creed doesn’t make the same mistakes as last year’s Assasin’s Creed Unity.

October 27

Halo 5: Guardians

New Halo! Check out some new multiplayer gameplay in the video above. It looks fantastic. I hope it is.

WWE 2K16

There’s a new WWE game coming out if you’re into that.

November 3

Need for Speed

The Need For Speed series took the year off last year (they made a bad movie instead). Will it be better than ever?

November 6

Call of Duty: Black Ops III

The Blacks Ops Call of Duty Games have been the best of the recent games. The third one comes out this year and with a new Black Ops there is of course zombies. This game’s zombies mode has its own story set in the 1940’s starring Ron Perlman and Jeff Goldblum.

November 10

Fallout 4

Rise of the Tomb Raider

These two games should be good. Why not pick up both on the 10th?

November 17

Star Wars Battlefront

The new Battlefront will include space battles. They said it wouldn’t but here’s the video to prove it will.

December 1

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege

Just Cause 3

December 4

Xenoblade Chronicles X

That’s a lot of games. Which ones should you buy? That’s up to you but here’s our recommendations:

Buy It

Fallout 4

Halo 5: Guardians

Just Cause 3

Star Wars Battlefront

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

Skip It

Need for Speed

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5

Rock Band 4 & Guitar Hero Live

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

There are usually a bunch of games that developers tried to have come out in time for the holiday season they just couldn’t finish in time. January through March usually has a strong lineup of releases. Here’s some games to watch for in early 2016.

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Tom Clancy’s The Division

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Don’t spend all your money before Christmas.  You’ll want to save for some of these early 2016 releases.
