The 2015 MLB season is not even a day old and the first trade has already been made.
The Padres Receive:
- Melvin Upton – Outfield
- Craig Kimbrel – Relief Pitcher
The Braves Receive:
- Cameron Maybin – Outfield
- Carlos Quentin – Outfield
- Matt Wisler – Pitching Prospect
- 41st pick in 2015 draft
The Padres expect to contend this year so they traded future production in Wisler and the draft pick and took on Upton’s terrible and expensive contract in exchange for Craig Kimbrel, the best reliever in the game.
The Braves don’t expect to give Kimbrel too many leads to protect this year and don’t want to pay Upton a bunch of money to sit on the bench.
This deal looks good for both teams. These two teams made a trade in December when the Padres acquired the good Upton brother, Justin, in exchange for prospects. I’m sure those four months apart were tough for the Uptons.
