Sports are frustrating. What keeps bringing us back is hope. Hope for next year. Hope that the rookie on your team will be the next superstar. Hope that your team will finally fire its inept coach. But what if there was no hope? What if the same teams win every year and those aren’t your teams?
We’re more than halfway through the NFL season and there are two remaining undefeated teams. One is the Carolina Panthers. A truly great story. A team everyone had written off after the injury to receiver Kelvin Benjamin. Even with Benjamin they weren’t expected to be one of the top teams in the league.
The other, of course, is the New England Patriots. Are they ever not good? They’ve won ten games every years as long as I can remember. They’ve won four Super Bowls in the last fifteen years and have been to two more. They’re the current defending champs. It looked like they would be worse this year after losing Darrelle Revis but somehow they’re better. It doesn’t look like they’ll lose this season. Even when they should lose, like this past Sunday, they win. Can you handle another Patriots Super Bowl win?
In the NBA, the defending champion Golden State Warriors are 11-0. They’re outscoring opponents by an average of 16.3 points per game. They were great last year but everyone expected a little regression. They look even better now. Stephen Curry has become the undisputed best player in the NBA now. They look like a team that will not only repeat this year, but win many future titles.
Have two defending champs ever looked this dominant in the following season as this year’s Patriots and Warriors? Why bother with the current NBA and NFL seasons if you’re not a fan of either team. We already know who’s going to win and it’s not your team.
The Patriots and Warriors will lose this season though. They’re definitely the favorites to win titles again but they might not. Hopefully they won’t. Hopefully your team will pull off the big upset and send them home. Hope will get us to keep watching.
