Between the burgers, beers, and basketball, you probably won’t be thinking too much about what Memorial Day really means. To most of us it’s a day off and an excuse to barbecue and enjoy the pool. But today is meant as a day for us to remember and honor those who died while serving in the armed forces. If you don’t care about the NBA, then you should spend your night watching the documentary Restrepo.
The documentary is about a platoon tasked with defending an outpost in the Korangal Valley in Afghanistan. This was one of the most dangerous assignments for a soldier. The film is named for a soldier that died early on during the assignment. The journalists that made the film, Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington, were actually there to document the mission. They didn’t make this after the fact. They were there to film as real battles were happening.
This film shows first hand what these soldiers had to give up. When you watch this, you’re not thousands of miles away. It’s all there in front of you; the horrifying reality that many of these soldiers faced. Watching this documentary will give you a greater appreciation for the day off you just had.
Restrepo is available for streaming on Netflix.
